This old motorcycle:Restoring a Vintage Triumph speed twin.
KBW is in the process of restoring a 500cc 1956 Triumph Speed twin motorcycle.
The Speed Twin was one of Triumph's most sucessful motorcycles and also happened to be one of the first parallel twin cylinder engines to be produced and sold in large numbers due to it's ground breaking OHV engine and compact design.
The Speed Twin is the ancestor of many great machines to be built by Triumph after World War II, notably the Thunderbirds and Bonneville twin cylinder machines.
The primary goal for this project is to have a very mechanically reliable machine hence restoration has begun with the engine.
The engine has been removed from the frame to facilitate a thorough rebuild.
The engine is mostly untouched. The Con rods, pistons, valves, cam followers and majority of other moving parts are orignal, installed 55 years ago by the Triumph Meriden factory.
We have replaced these with fresh parts as they were badly worn. All parts were imported from Tri-supply and SRM Engineering in England to ensure this beauty purrs like a kitten once we fire her up.
Some of the parts replaced are:-
- piston kit (8.1 compression)
- valves and guides
- valve springs/cotters
- cam followers
- con rod set(later model shell bearing type)
- All 4 timing pinnion(wider type)
- Morgo plunger oil pump
- SRM engineering Pressure release valve
- All gaskets and seals
- engine bearings
- engine fastners
The magneto was restored by Sean Hawker of Hawker electricals in England, one of the best places to restore a Lucas magneto.
